Andaz (1949, Hindustani, Persian) with English subtitles
With Independence and the partition of India in 1947, India was fortunate enough to have the bulk of its film industry located in its territory – Bombay, Bengal, Punjab and Madras. From these centres, grew the largest film industry in the world, even greater than Hollywood and Japan. The Satyajit Ray Foundation in conjunction with The Nehru Centre, is proud to present six features which we consider represent some of the best productions from some of the key film centres in India. Unfortunately not all of the important centres could not be represented because of lack of availability of English subtitled materials.
Directed/Produced by Mehboob Khan, starring Nargis, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, music by Naushad and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri, Andaz is a story of a rich and spoiled daughter (Nargis) and her friendship with Dilip (Dilip Kumar). Her fiancé Rajan (Raj Kapoor)’s arrival from London on the death of her father (Murad) complicates the matter. Rajan starts to suspect whether Nina could be having an affair with Dilip and notices that she is acting very distant towards Dilip since the day of their wedding.
We are pleased to confirm that Anupam Kher, the renowned and award winning film actor will be present to inaurgurate this Season of films.

It won the Filmfare Best Cinematographer Award (V K Murthy) and the Best Art Director - Black & White (M R Achrekar). (148 minutes).
Wed 24 September 6.45 pm
Mughal-e-Azam (1960) (Hindustani) with English subtitles
Directed by K. Asif starring Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, an epic Indian film, reminiscent of the older style of Indian cinema. It took nine years to finish and was the most lavish production for its time. The film broke box office records and held the record for the highest grossing film ever until 1975. The film re-tells a popular Indian tale and is loosely based on an episode in the life of the Mughal Emperor Akbar and his son, Salim, who went on to become the Emperor Jahangir. (173 minutes)
