The first in Ray's Apu Trilogy, Panther Panchali depictsthe struggle for survival of a family, in particular 2 children, in rural Bengal in the 1920's. Made on a shoestring budget, it nevertheles won the "Best Human Document" at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival and today is considered one of the greatest films ever, a moving an poetic testament to the uncertainties of life and the transcendence of the human spirit.
