![]() ![]() Girish Karnad is one of India's brightest shining stars, earning international praise as a playwright, poet, actor, directorand critic, was born in South India May 19th 1938.
His many honours include Jnanpith Award for Kannada in 1998, the highest literary honour conferred in India, Padma Shri - 1974, President's Golden Lotus for the Best Indian film for" Samskara" - 1970, National Award for Best Script for "Bhumika" - 1978, Mysore State Award for Best Kannada Film and the Best Direction for "Vamsha Vrukska" - 1972, and many, many more.
He has also served, amongst others, as the Director of the Film and Television Institute of India from 1974 to 1975, President of Karnataka Nataka Academy from 1976-1978 and Director of The Nehru Centre, London 2000 to 2003.
At the age of 60, Karnad vowed to give up cinema for the stage. "I've had a good life," he said, "I have managed to do all I could wish for - even be a government servant! Now I feel whatever time I have left should be spent doing what I like best - writing plays."
